Climbing Gym Stats, 2026

We mapped every indoor climbing and bouldering gym in America — 1,603 gyms with 513,375 climber reviews between them. Here's where the walls actually are, which states have the most climbing per resident, and how the big chains split the map with independents. (Journalists & bloggers: cite freely with a link.)

Which states have the most climbing gyms per capita?

Nationally there are about 4.7 climbing gyms per million residents. The per-capita crown goes to Wyoming at 15.3 gyms per million — 9 gyms for a state of 0.6 million people — with Colorado at 13.8 and New Hampshire at 12.1 close behind. The pattern is hard to miss: the states with the most famous outdoor rock also build the most indoor walls — gym climbing follows climbing culture, not population. At the other end, District of Columbia has just 1.4 per million.

#StateGymsPer million people
1 Wyoming 9 15.3
2 Colorado 82 13.8
3 New Hampshire 17 12.1
4 Utah 41 11.7
5 Montana 12 10.6
6 North Dakota 8 10
7 Oregon 41 9.6
8 Idaho 19 9.5
9 Vermont 5 7.7
10 Washington 60 7.5
11 Massachusetts 51 7.1
12 Maine 9 6.4
13 Connecticut 23 6.3
14 Illinois 79 6.2
15 Nevada 19 5.8

By raw count the big states still win — California has 174, Texas has 104, Colorado has 82 — but per climber-to-be, Wyoming is the easiest place in America to find a wall.

Chains vs. independents

Of the 1,603 gyms in the directory, 101 (6%) belong to a national chain and 1,502 are independents or small local brands — indoor climbing is still very much an independents’ game. The biggest brands in the directory: Central Rock Gym with 29 locations and The Gravity Vault with 16 locations.

Comparing locations of one brand? The chain pages rank every location of each chain by climber rating — the comparison the chains' own locators don't give you.

America's densest climbing-gym cities

Climbing gyms per 100k residents, cities over 50k population. Yes, the densest climbing-gym city in America really is Boulder, Colorado — the data wrote its own punchline.

Inside the gyms

Of the 1,603 venues in the directory, 951 are definitive climbing gyms — "rock climbing gym" is what they call themselves — with the rest being fitness centers, rec centers, and adventure venues built around real climbing walls. Methodology: gym counts from our continuously maintained national directory (public business listings, filtered to genuine indoor climbing and bouldering gyms); attribute counts (parties, kids programs, auto-belays, yoga & fitness, adaptive climbing) mined from gym websites and customer reviews; chain assignment from gym names and brand sites; population = US Census 2024 estimates. Per-capita = gyms ÷ state population × 1,000,000. Want the dataset for a story? Email us — we're happy to cut the numbers by state or metro, with attribution.
