The 25 Best Cities in America for Indoor Climbing (2026)

Which city gives a climber the best life? We scored every US city over 50,000 people with at least 3 climbing gyms on two things that actually matter: how much wall there is per resident, and how climbers rate those gyms. The winner is Boulder, Colorado. Yes, really — the data wrote its own punchline. The rest of the list is where it gets interesting — 16 states make the top 25, and most entries are college towns and outdoor-culture hubs, not megacities.

The ranking

Score = gyms per 100k residents × the city's median gym rating. Boulder runs away with it: 12 gyms for 107k people is 11.2 per 100k — several times the national rate — and climbers rate them a median 4.8★ on top.

Methodology

Gym counts come from our continuously maintained national directory of indoor climbing and bouldering gyms; ratings are each gym's public Google rating (we take the city's median so one outlier can't swing it); population is US Census city estimates. Cities need 50,000+ residents and 3+ gyms to qualify — small enough thresholds to let climbing towns shine, big enough to keep the math honest. Density counts gyms inside city limits, so metro suburbs score separately. Data as of 2026-07-15. See also the state-by-state per-capita ranking and the best-rated gyms in every state.
