Pacific Edge Climbing Gym
4.6 ★★★★★ 132 Google reviews · Climbing gym in Santa Cruz, California
Relaxed, long-standing climbing gym with ropes, bouldering and yoga and weights.
Plan your visit
- Gear rental nearly every climbing gym rents shoes (~$5–8 typical) and chalk; harness rental is often bundled with a ropes pass
- Waiver always required at climbing gyms — sign it online before you go to skip the front-desk line
- Belaying ropes gyms teach belaying or check your certification at the desk; bouldering and auto-belays need no partner and no belay test
- First timer? bouldering needs zero experience — rent shoes and walk in; staff will point you at the easiest problems
- Kids programs classes, camps, or youth teams mentioned — check the current schedule
- Yoga & fitness mentioned alongside the climbing — ask about the class schedule and what a pass includes
- Memberships available — worth asking about if you'd climb more than a few times a month

What's inside
“Bouldering review: In Europe I boulder at about comfortably 6a-b which I think is a V3-4 grade, but I found this gym to be humbling.”
“4/5 top rope - nice tall climbs, but kind of awkwardly cramped in with other people in the dihedral and chimney area.”
“Could maybe use a few auto belays for beginners or folks without regular partners.”
“They update the climbs often, the sauna is great, and the weight room is well stocked.”
“Since I joined, they expanded the back bouldering section, which has a ~16-foot wall, crack climbing options, and two kilter boards.”

What climbers say again and again
“Next to the outdoor cardio area is the weight room, where you'll find hang boards, a pull-up bar, a few weight machines, and other weight room essentials.”
“Pleasant and friendly staff, great routes for all levels.”
“Grades were also not very beginner friendly, there was one small area with a kid friendly set up but everywhere else the lowest grade was a reasonably stiff V0.”
“Otherwise the gym is nice, well equipped (great training area) and the staff are very nice.”
“Staff are always friendly and welcoming, fostering a fantastic climbing community in Santa Cruz.”
From the reviews
5/5 stars for staff - super friendly and helpful. 2/5 stars for boulder area - lacked down climb holds or super deep jugs on overlapping easier climbs. Not nearly enough padding on the floor (most other gyms I go to in reasonably populated areas have at least 2 times as much soft foam).
I highly recommend Pac Edge! I was new to climbing and took their Basic Safety course that is offered for free to members and learned everything that I needed to know to pass the belay test. Staff are always friendly and welcoming, fostering a fantastic climbing community in Santa Cruz.
Bouldering review: In Europe I boulder at about comfortably 6a-b which I think is a V3-4 grade, but I found this gym to be humbling. The routes are very technical and physically demanding. Even the V0-2 range routes are demanding and not really beginner friendly.
Im from the South Bay, but this gym is worth the commute any day. Pleasant and friendly staff, great routes for all levels. I only wish they had more space to expand their gym. That being said, they are still not don't get as crazy as the overrated major gyms
