Climbing gyms in Chicago

Chicago climbs indoors out of necessity — five months of winter will do that — and First Ascent has built the city's backbone with full-service gyms from Avondale to the Block 37 bouldering spot right in the Loop. University walls (UIC) and park-district options fill the gaps. Deep-dish quads optional. Weeknights after 6 get busy in winter; lunchtime Block 37 sessions are the local cheat code.

What local climbers say

I came from Milwaukee for an afternoon of climbing. The gym was about 5 minutes off the Interstate, easy to find, and had ample parking. This was my second visit so I didn't have to get belay certified, but I would warn first timers the certification process can take up to an hour as you put your name on the list and…

Excellent facility. Swimming Kickboxing and gym are my favourite. You can also check your fat %. There is a badminton and basketball court inside. Also a quiet place for meditation and yoga. Machines in gym are superb, perfect muscle contraction. They also give towels if you forget yours at home for free.

Since the moment they finished, this has been my favorite place! Such a great place to explore! There's rock climbing, bike trails and you can even fish if you like. The landscaping is perfect, the water views are awesome and it's a great place to bring your fur baby! Or your human baby!
