Kids climbing in Albuquerque: practical notes

• Test interest with an open-climb visit first. A day pass, rental shoes, and an hour on the bouldering wall or an auto-belay tells you whether a class is worth booking — no program commitment needed, just a supervising adult.
• Confirm ages and schedules by phone. Class rosters and camp weeks change every season, and age cutoffs vary gym to gym — "what do you have for a 7-year-old this fall?" is a 30-second question.
• Gear comes with the program. Classes and camps nearly always include harness and shoe rental; for open climb, gyms rent kid sizes at the desk. Comfortable, movable clothes are all you need to bring.
• You won't be asked to belay. Coaches and staff handle ropes in programs, and many kids areas run on auto-belays. If you want to belay your own kid at open climb later, gyms teach short belay-certification classes.
• Sign the waiver online before you go. Every gym requires one per climber, and a minor's waiver must be signed by their own parent or legal guardian — handle it from your phone before drop-off, especially if someone else is driving.
